Faced with rainy conditions all weekend, Jaeden Workman (Morrison, Ill./Morrison) finished second overall to lead the Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Knox Prairie Fire Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Soangetaha Country Club.
Golfers completed about 12 holes on Saturday before play was suspended. They finished the first round Sunday before canceling the scheduled second round because of unplayable conditions.
Workman finished with a 6-over-par 78, leaving her tied for second with Dubuque’s Madison Bowers and just one shot back of Grinnell’s Nina Kouchi for medalist honors.
Freshman Kelli Kennedy (Henry, Ill./Henry-Senachwine) also had a strong showing for Sandburg, shooting an 81 to tie for fifth overall.
Sandburg finished at 337 as a team, giving the Chargers their best score ever at Soangetaha. The previous program best at the course was 342 last year.
Sandburg placed fourth out of seven teams, with the Chargers behind Dubuque (325), Grinnell (328) and Illinois College (334). The Chargers beat out four-year programs Augustana (340), Monmouth (343) and Knox (374).
